Working towards a sustainable future

Our very name commits us to sustainable development. “mare”, the Latin word for sea, stands for what is by far the largest eco-system on our planet. Long considered to be safe from human influence, we now know how polluted our oceans and seas are becoming, and how they are significantly warming up through rising CO₂ emissions.

At maresystems we back up our commitment to sustainable development with specific actions oriented to six of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda. See below to discover how we are contributing to these six SDGs.

Good Health and Well‑Being
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being for all at all ages is essential to sustainable development.

Our contribution

To promote the health and well-being of our employees maresystems has equipped its offices with height-adjustable desks and other user-friendly office equipment, as well as ensuring a healthy working environment through a plentiful supply of fresh fruit, for example.

Quality Education
Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development.

Our contribution

At various levels of further education from vocational training to university degrees, maresystems opens up opportunities for young people through work placements (for BSc or MSc students) and practical assistance in writing dissertations. Through close collaboration with specific universities maresystems is also helping to push back the boundaries of science and technology.

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Investments in infrastructure are crucial to achieving sustainable development.

Our contribution

maresystems has contributed to significant advances in the field of ship automation Through a variety of innovations that have made navigation more accurate and shipping safer. vista® next, our situation awareness solution that ensures officers on the bridge of a ship are always fully informed about what is going on, is one good example of how innovation is driving safety at sea.

Responsible Consumption and Production
Sustainable use of environment and resources promotes the transition towards low-carbon and green economies.

Our contribution

Today’s throw-away society is the epitome of non-sustainability. At maresystems we work to counteract this disposable mentality and are encouraging responsible consumption by manufacturing long-lasting products with a high degree of repairability. In this way, we can help to reduce the long-term environmental impact of our automation technology.

Climate Action
Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone, everywhere.

Our contribution

We contribute in multiple ways to reducing CO₂ emissions and thus tackling climate change. We use climate-neutral packaging and shipment methods. Our company cars are partly electric-powered. We reduce business travel to a minimum through remote service and support as well as videoconferencing. Our offices are paperless, as are the “printers” for mandatory documentation on board ships equipped with our automation systems.

Life Below Water
Careful management of this essential global resource is a key feature of a sustainable future.

Our contribution

In line with our commitment to improving the maritime environment, we support the Lighthouse Foundation which works to improve the relationship between humans and the marine environment within the context of sustainable development. Another key focus is on integrating into our system solutions environment-friendly technologies such as ballast water treatment and scrubbers.

Sustainability in practice

One of the practical examples of how maresystems is working towards a sustainable future is replacing some of our fossil fuel-powered company cars with e-vehicles and thus improving our carbon footprint.
